Write On Art Prize

The Write On Art Prize is open until March 31, 2020. The prize is sponsored by Art UK and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.

Free to enter.

Wicked Young Writers

The “prestigious Wicked Young Writer Awards” (The Times) was established by the long-running musical WICKED to link the important messages of the production with a competition that would inspire young people to use creative writing to look at life a little differently. Since its launch in 2010, we have received over 20,000 entries to the award.

The Wicked Young Writer Awards 2020 are open until March 2, 2020. 

Funny Pearls Competition

Brief: Write a story of 100 words on the theme: Winter.

The Funny Pearls Competition is open until December 1, 2019.

Reflex Fiction Flash Fiction Competition

Welcome to Reflex Fiction, a quarterly international flash fiction competition for stories between 180 and 360 words run by independent publisher, Reflex Press.

 Open until November 30, 2019.

F(r)iction Winter 2019 Literary Contests

Open until December 15, 2019.

Christopher Tower Poetry Prize 2020

The Tower Poetry competition is the UK’s most valuable prize for young poets, and is open to students between 16-18 years of age who are educated in the UK.

Open until March 2, 2020

Soundwork Short Story Competition

To enter the short story competition, send a story (one only) of up to 2,500 words as an attachment to by 30th April 2020.

Open until April 30, 2020.

BeAnimal Writing Competition

Narrate an account of an experience in your life that brought you closer to nature.
Write a short piece on your ideal utopia and some of the things you would find there.
Write an informational piece on something that we could all adopt to live a happier, healthier life – whether it’s an ideology, dietary improvements or physical activity!
Your essays should not exceed 1000 words.

Wales Poetry Award 2019

Wales Poetry Award, a national competition to discover the very best international contemporary poetry.

Open until November 28, 2019.

Two Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival Poetry Competitions.



The theme of the competition is Snowdrops or the work of James Allen.

Open until December 31, 2019 (11pm).

Nobrow Short Story Competition

Submit a short story or a creative non-fiction piece of up to 3,000 words.

Open until 2nd December 2019.

The Elmbridge Literary Competition 2019-2020

They are looking for short stories and poems that explore new worlds.

Open until February 7, 2020.

Creative Writing Ink Competition


They are  looking for poetry, up to 40 lines. Open theme.

If you are under the age of 18, you must have the consent of a parent or guardian over 18 .

They will publish the winner’s details on their Facebook page.

Last day of every month.

Festival of Words Poetry Competition

Theme: ‘My Mind, My Thoughts’.

Open until November 30, 2019.

National Short Story Award Winner

 This prize is awarded yearly by the BBC. 

Entrants must have a prior record of publishing creative work in the UK.

Stories up to 8,000 words are accepted.

Commonwealth Short Story Prize

Stories must be 2,000 – 5,000 words in length and previously unpublished.

2020 is now closed.

Costa Book Awards logo

There are five categories; First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book.

Open until the last Friday in June.

Encore Awards

“The award fills a niche in the catalogue of literary prizes by celebrating the achievement of outstanding second novels, often neglected in comparison to the attention given to promising first books.”

Open until 31 January 2020.

RSL Ondaatje Prize

We are now open for submissions for the 16th year of the £10,000 Prize for fiction, non-fiction or poetry best evoking the spirit of a place. 

Wednesday 11 December 2019.

The Spread the Word Life Writing Prize

An unpublished non-fiction piece up to 5,000 words and relating to your own life experience. Make sure you read the rules before you submit.

Open until 3 February at 11am.

Sunday Times

The award, for a story of 6,000 words or less, is open to any novelist or short story writer from around the world who has been published in the UK or Ireland.

Open until December 13, 2019.

T. S. Elliot

An annual prize for the best new poetry collection published in the UK or Ireland.


BT Young Scientist & Technologist of the Year

Cool For School Competition

This competition is designed to challenge students to explore the science, technology, engineering and mathematical principles that underlie refrigeration processes and come up with a simple experiment or presentation to demonstrate one of these.

Open until December 1.

CO2Chem Video Prize 2019

We are pleased to announce that a new science-media prize has been announced for 2019. The prize will be awarded in two categories for the best short-form documentary showing how Carbon Dioxide Utilisation can be used as part of an approach to remove fossil-based carbon from the economy. This is all part of an effort to reduce and then reverse the harmful effects of climate change.

FIRST Tech Challenge

Take part in a galactic robotics competition for ages 12-18 powered by Star Wars: Force for Change. In teams, students design, build and programme a robot to take on the global FIRST® Tech Challenge.
